Saghro & Sahara Desert

Explore the southern volcanic rocks of Jebel Saghro and combine it with a Sahara desert trip.


Overview

When its snowy and freezing in the High Atlas Mountains, Jebel Saghro & Sahara desert trekking is the perfect choice for enjoying a warmer weather in the winter. Departing from Marrakech early morning to cross the High Atlas through Tichka pass at 2260m with a lunch break. Starting the trek from the Dades valley to get into the heart of the volcano massif where meeting nomads who live in camps, caves and villages, discovering their lifestyle meanwhile crossing a couple of volcanic passes.

The landscape will change and you will see an extraordinary contrast between the lava formations, canyons and basaltic Pitons and the deep green valleys. Finishing the trek on the southern side in the Nkob, capital of the Nomads, then a short drive to Merzouga in the Sahara desert where the trekking will start on camels in the evening then crossing the dunes spending the night in Berber tents at the feet of the highest sand dunes in Morocco and enjoying the spirit of the desert. .

Day One Marrakech - Atlas Mountains - Dades.

Departing from Marrakech, passing the High Atlas Mountains at Tichka, Telouet and Ait Ben Haddou Kasbahs, Ouarzazate, Qallat Mgouna (Roses valley), Ait Youl village at 1400m in Dades valley, overnight in camp or guest house.

Day Two Ait Youl Village - Ano Igdad

Trekking departure from Ait Youl village, visiting Nomad families’ tents, Birds valley with a lunch break, overnight in Ano Igdad camp next to the river.

Day Three Ano Igdad - Tagmoute Plateau

Ano Igdad, El Mers canyon and plateau with a lunch break, Tagmoute pass at 1900m, Tagmoute plateau, overnight in camp next to the waterfall in Tagmoute canyon

Day Four Tagmoute - Tifdassine

Tagmoute canyon, Assaka village, Ait Ouazin valley (nomad villages, gorges), overnight in Tifdassine oasis next to waterfall.

Day Five Tifdassin - Merzouga

Tifdassine, Handour valley, lunch break in Handour village, ending the Saghro trekking and transfer to Merzouga via Nkob & Errissani towns where meeting the camel team. Starting the 2 hour camel trekking from Merzouga around 6pm to Waha Oasis and spending the night in the fixed camp where you will have the chance to observe the stars which feels like being in the universe thanks to the usually very clear sky and remote quietness of the Sahara desert.

Day Six Merzouga - Draa Valley - Ouarzazate - Ait Ben Haddou.

Merzouga, Errissani, Tazarine, Draa valley, Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, overnight in guest house.

Day Seven Ait Ben Haddou - Telouet - Marrakech
